Middlebury College Fall Family Weekend, October 30 to November 1, 2026: the light on campus and two buildings to photograph in Middlebury
Middlebury College Fall Family Weekend, October 30 to November 1, 2026: two walls in the town of Middlebury that line up with the low sun, the light day by day as daylight saving time ends, where to stand for the family picture, the campus in morning light and when the Old Stone Row lines up.
For October 30 to November 1, 2026.
Fall Family Weekend at Middlebury College runs from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1, 2026. This guide lists two walls in the town of Middlebury that the low sun lands on square that weekend with no building in the way. It adds a spot for the family picture, a campus spot in morning light and the days in 2027 when the Old Stone Row and Mead Chapel line up. Post your pictures with #HengeDays.
Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 AM on Sunday, November 1. Times on Friday and Saturday are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and times on Sunday are Eastern Standard Time (EST), an hour earlier by the clock. For a level horizon, the sun rises at 7:26 AM EDT on Friday and 6:29 AM EST on Sunday, at about 109 degrees, and sets at 5:45 PM EDT on Friday and 4:42 PM EST on Sunday, at about 251 degrees.
The weekend's schedule and the light
In search results on October 17, Middlebury's Fall Family Weekend page listed October 30 to November 1, 2026, as the dates to save, and the 2026 to 2027 academic calendar listed the same weekend. Those searches found no 2026 list of events, and Middlebury's own pages could not be opened from where this guide was written. So the list below gives the light for each day and no event times. In past years the Parent Welcome Center was in the lobby of the Mahaney Arts Center, open on Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The 2026 hours were not listed. Check the Fall Family Weekend page and the college's events calendar before you plan the weekend.
- Friday, October 30: sunrise at 7:26 AM EDT. Mister Up's on Bakery Lane (entry 1) lines up at 7:49 AM EDT. From 8:15 to 9:00 AM EDT the sun lights the east front of the Old Stone Row, the campus spot in Part 1. In the evening the Sheriff's Department (entry 2) lines up at 5:12 PM EDT. Sunset is at 5:45 PM EDT.
- Saturday, October 31: sunrise at 7:27 AM EDT, and Mister Up's at 7:48 AM EDT. The Old Stone Row has the same morning light from 8:15 to 9:00 AM EDT. If the Parent Welcome Center at the Mahaney Arts Center keeps its past hours, it closes at 12:30 PM, and the afternoon is free for downtown. In the evening the Sheriff's Department, the family photo spot below, lines up at 5:13 PM EDT. Sunset is at 5:44 PM EDT.
- Sunday, November 1: clocks go back one hour at 2:00 AM. Sunrise is at 6:29 AM EST, and Mister Up's lines up at 6:47 AM EST. The Old Stone Row has its morning light from 7:15 to 8:00 AM EST. In the afternoon the Sheriff's Department lines up at 4:14 PM EST. Sunset is at 4:42 PM EST, an hour earlier by the clock than on Saturday.
Part 1: the Middlebury College campus
No campus wall that lines up with this weekend's low sun passes every check and has a public place to stand. The Old Stone Row, made up of Old Chapel, Painter Hall and Starr Hall, faces east toward the town and west toward Mead Chapel, at 93 to 96 and 273 to 276 degrees. Mead Chapel, McCardell Bicentennial Hall, the Davis Family Library, the McCullough Student Center and most other halls are set on nearly the same lines. This weekend the sun rises at about 109 degrees and sets at about 251, so it never stands square to those east and west walls. It meets their south ends square around midday, about 32 degrees up. The few campus walls that face the low sun stand behind other buildings at their moment. Atwater A and Atwater B, two halls of Atwater Commons, face 250 degrees, but Coffrin Hall stands in front of them, and their moment comes with the sun at the horizon. Old Chapel stands in front of a short wall of the Davis Family Library, and the east wall of Brooker House on Ridgeline Road sits in a corner of its own building.
For a campus picture this weekend, use the morning light on the east front of the Old Stone Row. From 8:15 to 9:00 AM EDT on Friday and Saturday, and from 7:15 to 8:00 AM EST on Sunday, the sun is 7 to 14 degrees up at 117 to 126 degrees. That is 24 to 33 degrees off square, so the light falls across the stone at a low angle. Stand the family on the lawn east of Old Chapel with the row behind them. The photographer stands east-southeast of them, with the sun behind and to one side. No building in the outlines rises more than 2 degrees toward the sun from that lawn. Trees on the lawn and the Green Mountains east of town are not part of that check. The east front of Old Chapel is in shade after 12:47 PM EDT on Friday and Saturday and after 11:47 AM EST on Sunday, when the sun passes its south end. These times come from the Henge Days engine for the sun's position, and they were not checked on the ground.
Most of the buildings a family asks about first face close to east and west, so they line up with the sun near the spring and fall equinoxes. Their next days are below, from the same engine for each wall's bearing. The check for other buildings was not run for these days.
- Old Chapel: the west wall, 17 m facing 273 degrees, lines up with the sunset at the horizon from March 25 to 27, 2027. The east wall, facing 93 degrees, lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from March 14 to 16, 2027.
- Painter Hall: the west wall, 32 m facing 274 degrees, lines up with the sunset at the horizon from March 27 to 30, 2027. The east wall lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from March 12 to 14, 2027.
- Starr Hall: the west wall, 36 m facing 276 degrees, lines up with the sunset at the horizon from March 30 to April 2, 2027. The east wall lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from March 9 to 11, 2027.
- Mead Chapel, listed in OpenStreetMap as Middlebury Chapel: the east end, 21 m facing 85 degrees, lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from March 28 to 31, 2027, and gets golden morning light again from September 3 to 15, 2027. The west end, facing 265 degrees, lines up with the sunset at the horizon from March 10 to 13, 2027.
- McCardell Bicentennial Hall: the west walls, 135 m in all facing 261 degrees, line up with the sunset at the horizon from March 3 to 6, 2027. The east walls, facing 81 degrees, line up with the sunrise at the horizon from April 5 to 7, 2027.
- Mahaney Arts Center: the west-southwest wall, 23 m facing 242 degrees, gets golden evening light from November 4 to 23, 2026, and lines up with the sunset at the horizon from November 17 to 23, 2026.
- Davis Family Library: the east wall, 21 m facing 84 degrees, lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from April 2 to 4, 2027.
Part 2: the town of Middlebury
Downtown Middlebury is about 1 km east of Old Chapel, down College Street. Main Street crosses Otter Creek beside the falls. The Battell Block, Merchants Row, the Town Hall Theater, the Henry Sheldon Museum and the Middlebury Inn stand within a few blocks of the falls, and the Congregational Church faces the green at the north end of Main Street. The Marble Works, old marble mill buildings with shops and restaurants, is by the creek just below the falls, and a footbridge crosses the creek near them. Frog Hollow is beside the falls. Between events, downtown is where to walk and eat. The Pulp Mill covered bridge crosses Otter Creek about 1.5 km north of downtown, and the Trail Around Middlebury, a footpath loop, circles the town. None of these landmarks has a wall that lines up this weekend with a clear view. The two walls below are by the creek and on Court Street, south of downtown.
1 Mister Up's Restaurant & Pub
Middlebury, Vermont
- Wall
- east-southeast, facing 113°
- Sun
- The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Oct 30 to Nov 1. Best: Sunday, November 1 at 6:47 AM EST, 2.4° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- WCAX reported peak color across the Champlain Valley on October 15, with some leaves already past peak (WCAX). Two weeks later, by the weekend, many trees in town can be bare.
- Where to stand
- The wall is the restaurant's east-southeast side, 17 m, facing Otter Creek. The water comes close to the wall, so frame it at an angle from the sidewalk of the Cross Street bridge, northeast of the restaurant, with the sun behind you and to your left. The sun lines up with the wall at 7:49 AM EDT on Friday, 7:48 AM EDT on Saturday and 6:47 AM EST on Sunday, 3.3, 2.9 and 2.4 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is 2 to 6 degrees up. A building toward the sun has no height in OpenStreetMap. The check assumed one and found its roofline at 2.3 degrees, just below the sun on Sunday. The Green Mountains east of town can hide a sun this low, so the light can reach the wall later than these times or not at all. Friday, with the highest sun, has the best chance. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.
- Clear view
- Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (2.4° up) in its direction.
A restaurant and bar at 25 Bakery Lane, on the west bank of Otter Creek, just south of the Cross Street bridge and a few minutes' walk from Main Street. A Middlebury College guide to the town lists it as a bar and grill with a riverside deck (Middlebury College). Check its hours before you go.

2 Sheriff's Department
Middlebury, Vermont
- Wall
- west-southwest, facing 245°
- Sun
- The low evening sun lines up with this wall on Oct 30 to Nov 1. Best: Sunday, November 1 at 4:14 PM EST, 4.0° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- WCAX reported peak color across the Champlain Valley on October 15, with some leaves already past peak (WCAX). Two weeks later, by the weekend, many trees in town can be bare.
- Where to stand
- The wall is the front of the building's southern part, 13 m, facing Court Street. Stand on the sidewalk along Court Street, west-southwest of the wall, with the sun behind you. Stay out of the street. The sun lines up with the wall at 5:12 PM EDT on Friday, 5:13 PM EDT on Saturday and 4:14 PM EST on Sunday, 4.9, 4.4 and 4.0 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is 2 to 6 degrees up. A building toward the sun has no height in OpenStreetMap. The check assumed one and found its roofline at 3.2 degrees, below the sun on all three days. The shorter, set-back part of the front, north of the lit wall, is in shade at that moment. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.
- Clear view
- Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (4.0° up) in its direction.
The Addison County Sheriff's Department, at 35 Court Street, the stretch of US 7 that runs south from Court Square and the Middlebury Inn. It is about 400 m south of the inn. It is a working office, so photograph it from the sidewalk and keep clear of its drive and parking.

Family photo spot. Stand the family on the Court Street sidewalk in front of the Sheriff's Department, with the lit wall behind them. The photographer stands a few steps west-southwest of them, toward the street, with the sun low behind. That lights faces and the wall behind them in the same warm light. Keep clear of the department's drive and parking, and stay out of the street. Go on Friday at 5:12 PM EDT or Saturday at 5:13 PM EDT, or on Sunday at 4:14 PM EST. Friday has the highest sun of the three, 4.9 degrees up. A public sidewalk runs directly in front of the lit wall. Post it with #HengeDays. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.
How the list was made
Henge Days computed every named building within 300 to 450 meters of 17 points. Eleven covered the campus, downtown and the Pulp Mill covered bridge: Old Chapel, Mead Chapel, the Davis Family Library, Battell Hall and Ross Commons, McCardell Bicentennial Hall, the Knoll, the Mahaney Arts Center and Alumni Stadium, College Street, Main Street and the green, the Marble Works and the bridge. A second pass added six more: Court Street, Washington Street, Mill Street, Weybridge Street, South Main Street and the plazas on US 7. It used OpenStreetMap outlines, 1,180 buildings in all. It kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1. It then traced the sun's path from each wall against every outline it had fetched and dropped the walls where a neighboring building stands higher than the sun. A second check traced the path from five points along each wall, and the map pictures were checked for walls shaded by their own building or by a building attached to it.
The checks leave seven walls, fewer than in this package's other guides, and this guide lists two of them. Of the 1,180 outlines, 169 carry a name, and the scout covers named buildings only. Twenty named walls face this weekend's low sun, and most stand behind a neighbor at their moment. On the campus, Atwater A, Atwater B, the Davis Family Library and Brooker House fail, as Part 1 describes. Near College Street, Kitchel House and the Deanery line up behind taller neighbors. Downtown and on Court Street, the east-southeast wall of the Battell Block, the Marquis Theater, Kinney Drugs, Champlain Farms, Tenny Brook, the Addison County Chamber of Commerce and County Tire Center line up, but each has a building in front of it at that moment. Five walls pass and are left out. Atwater Commons House, at 275 Weybridge Street on the north edge of the campus, lines up in the evening on all three days with a clear view, but it is a residence. The long west side of Middlebury Union High School, at 73 Charles Avenue, lines up in the evening on all three days with a clear view. The only place to stand in front of it is the school's own grounds, with no public sidewalk on that side. The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, joined to the high school, has a clear west-southwest wall on Saturday and Sunday and faces the same grounds. Weybridge Garage, just past the Pulp Mill covered bridge, faces private land, with no public place to stand. The lit wall of the Mary Hogan School is 9 m long, too short to photograph.
Both picks are golden days, with the sun 2 to 6 degrees up, and each entry says so. The walls that meet the sun at the horizon this weekend have buildings in front of them, and the mountains on both sides of the valley hide a sun that low. Two of the searches returned the most buildings one search can return, near College Street and on Washington Street. The searches around them cover the same ground.
Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. The Green Mountains rise east of town, and the Adirondacks stand across Lake Champlain to the west. Either range can hide a sun that is only a degree or two up. The morning wall at Mister Up's meets the sun 2.4 to 3.3 degrees up and can stay in shade at its moment. The evening wall on Court Street meets the sun 4.0 to 4.9 degrees up. Most neighboring buildings carry no height in OpenStreetMap. The check assumed about three stories for them, and each entry says so. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine for the wall's own bearing, in Eastern time.
How to read each entry
Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall. The Clear view line is the result of the check for other buildings on the best day.
Any building has a page like the ones above, your student's hall included. Whatever you shoot, post it with #HengeDays:
