For October 23 to 24, 2026.

MIT Family Weekend is Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, 2026. Henge Days checked every named building on the campus, in Kendall Square, on both banks of the Charles and in Central Square for a wall that the rising or setting sun lines up with on those days. No wall passed every check. This guide gives the weekend's light beside its events, a spot in Killian Court for the family picture, and the November days when the campus walls line up with the sunset. Post your pictures with #HengeDays.

### The weekend's schedule and the light

The events below are the ones MIT's Family Weekend 2026 page and the listing for the Family Weekend concert showed in search results on October 17. MIT's own pages did not load from where this guide was written, so the list comes from those search summaries, and a time appears only where a listing gave one. Check [the Family Weekend page](https://alumevents.mit.edu/event/familyweekend2026/home) before you plan around them.

- Friday, October 23, daytime: open classes, Campus Conversations with MIT leadership and students, department receptions, lab tours and athletic events. Sunrise is at 7:06 AM. No wall on the campus lines up with it this weekend with a clear view.
- Friday, October 23, between events: the MIT Museum and the roof garden in Kendall Square, at the east end of the campus. Part 2 has the details.
- Friday, October 23, 8:00 PM: MIT's Annual Family Weekend Concert, "Virtuosic Legacies", with the MIT Wind Ensemble and the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble, in Kresge Auditorium. Sunset is at 5:49 PM, more than two hours before. From the Harvard Bridge, a few minutes down Massachusetts Avenue from Kresge, the sun goes down upriver, at 255 degrees.
- Saturday, October 24: the MIT Great Glass Pumpkin Patch, campus tours, a campus dining experience, athletic events and student group events. The search results gave no times. At 11:06 AM the sun stands square to the front of Building 10 under the Great Dome, the family photo spot below.
- Saturday, October 24: the MIT Family Weekend a cappella concert. The search results gave no time or place for 2026. Sunset is at 5:48 PM.

### Part 1: the MIT campus

No campus wall lines up with this weekend's sunrise or sunset with a clear view. The main buildings around Killian Court and the Infinite Corridor share one grid, with walls facing 66, 156, 246 and 336 degrees. The sun rises at 105 degrees and sets at 255 this weekend, so it meets those walls head-on only when it is more than 6 degrees up. The few campus walls that do face the low sun stand in a taller neighbor's shadow. The west end of Kappa Sigma on Memorial Drive is one: MacGregor House rises 19 degrees toward the sun from in front of it.

Family photo spot. Killian Court, with the Great Dome behind the family. The front of Building 10 faces 156 degrees, toward the river, and the sun stands square to it on Friday at 11:07 AM and on Saturday at 11:06 AM, about 33 degrees up. The columns and the dome are lit straight on then. Stand the family on the lawn of the court with their backs to the dome, and stand south-southeast of them, toward Memorial Drive, with the sun behind you. The light is high, so faces get short shadows under the brows. Saturday's campus tours have no listed times, so check the schedule against 11:06 AM. Post it with #HengeDays. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.

The campus grid lines up two weeks later. Twice a year the setting sun shines straight down the Infinite Corridor, the hallway of about 250 m that runs from Massachusetts Avenue through Building 7 and Building 10 to the east campus. MIT calls it MIThenge ([MIT News](https://news.mit.edu/2003/mithenge), [The Tech](https://thetech.com/2024/02/08/mit-henge-two)). The walls on the same line face 246 degrees and meet the setting sun at the horizon on the same days. The days and times below are from the Henge Days engine for each wall, computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground. Each name opens the wall in Henge Days.

### Part 2: Kendall Square, the river and Central Square

Kendall Square starts at the east end of the campus, around the Kendall/MIT station on Main Street. Between Friday's classes and the concert, or between Saturday's tours, the MIT Museum at 314 Main Street, next to the station, is listed as open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM ([MIT Museum](https://mitmuseum.mit.edu/visit/hours-admission-directions)). The roof garden on the Kendall Center Green Garage at 90 Broadway, reached by the garage elevator or a stairway from Main Street, is listed as open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with a view over the city ([Cambridge Office for Tourism](https://www.cambridgeusa.org/listing/cambridge-center-roof-garden)). Check both before you go.

Kendall's towers stand close together. The one long wall there that lines up this weekend, the east side of the Watermark Kendall apartments, faces the sunrise at the horizon on Friday and Saturday, but a building in front of it rises 12 degrees toward the sun.

On the river, the Cambridge bank faces south across the water, and the dorms on Memorial Drive turn their long walls toward it. Across the Harvard Bridge, the houses on Bay State Road and the streets near it have walls facing 250 degrees, but each stands against its neighbor. The one wall with no building in the way on Friday and Saturday is the west side of the [Fens Gate House](https://hengedays.com/at/42.35094,-71.09194?q=Fens+Gate+House%2C+Boston%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F29650712&facade=0&d=2026-10-21), the granite waterworks gatehouse at Charlesgate, where the Muddy River meets the Charles. It was restored as an office and workshop for the state's flood control operations ([Finegold Alexander Architects](https://www.faainc.com/project/fens-gatehouse)). It stands among the highway ramps at Charlesgate, with no walk on its west side, and the elevated roads there are not in the check, so it is not a stop in this guide.

In Central Square, the east wall of [St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church](https://hengedays.com/at/42.36446,-71.09955?q=Saint+Paul+African+Methodist+Episcopal+Church%2C+Cambridge%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F29513581&facade=5&d=2026-10-25) on Bishop Allen Drive faces the low morning sun on Sunday, October 25, the morning after Family Weekend, at 7:47 AM, 5.9 degrees up. The congregation dates to the 1870s and is the oldest Black church in Cambridge ([ArtsBoston](https://calendar.artsboston.org/organization/st-paul-ame-church/)). The building across Columbia Street has no height in OpenStreetMap, and with an estimated one it shades all but 3 m of the 26 m wall, so the church is left out too.

### How the list was made

Henge Days computed every named building within 300 to 400 meters of 14 points: Killian Court and the Great Dome, the east campus and Hayden Library, the Stata Center and Vassar Street, the Media Lab and Ames Street, Kresge Auditorium with the Chapel and the Student Center, the Z Center and Briggs Field, Baker House and the river dorms, Simmons Hall and West Campus, the Harvard Bridge and the Esplanade, Charlesgate and Bay State Road, Kendall Square and the Kendall/MIT station, Main Street and Broadway, Central Square and Bishop Allen Drive, and Massachusetts Avenue at the Christian Science Plaza. It used OpenStreetMap outlines. It kept the 41 walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Friday, October 23, to Sunday, October 25. It then traced the sun's path from each wall and dropped the walls where a neighboring building stands higher than the sun.

That check ran first against the outlines fetched around each wall's own point, which kept 8 walls. It then ran against every outline fetched for this guide, 5,401 buildings from 135 searches, including grids of smaller searches over Central Square, Cambridgeport and the Back Bay, where one search returns at most 200 buildings. That pass found blockers the first one missed and kept 2 walls. Kappa Sigma lost its view to MacGregor House. Watermark Kendall, 907 Main Street, International Fellowship House on Bay State Road and two storefronts on Massachusetts Avenue near Berklee lost theirs to buildings that only a neighboring search had fetched. The check also ran at points every 3 m along each wall. The two walls left, the Fens Gate House and St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, are in Part 2 with the reasons they are not stops.

Cambridge streets run at many angles, and still few walls face 105 or 255 degrees this weekend. MIT's main buildings face 66, 156, 246 and 336 degrees. Kendall's towers stand close together, and the Back Bay rows share their walls. Most of the walls that face the sun stand against a taller building.

Hills, trees, bridges and elevated roads are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. Where a blocking building's outline carries no height, the check assumed one. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine for the wall's own bearing, in Eastern time.

### How to read each entry

Each building name above opens the building in Henge Days. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall named in the text. Below it, the Henge days list shows that wall's next days, with a Save button that keeps a day in your planner, and the year chart shows the head-on days for every wall.

### Plan a trip of your own

- Search for a building, or tap one on the map, and pick the wall you want lit. Your student's hall works too.
- The Henge days list shows the next days the sun lines up with that wall, at the horizon or in golden light, with the time.
- The Today tab shows the sun's path for one day and when it is square to each wall. Check the cloud forecast there before you go.
- Save a day to your [planner](https://hengedays.com/planner) to get a reminder and a calendar entry, or use [Along a street](https://hengedays.com/route) to find every wall that lines up along one road.

Post your picture from the campus, the river or Kendall Square with #HengeDays.
