Northeastern University Family Weekend, October 23 to 25, 2026: five buildings to photograph on campus and along Huntington Avenue
Five walls on Northeastern University's Boston campus and west of Huntington Avenue, by the Back Bay Fens and Fenway Park, that line up with the sunrise or sunset during Family & Friends Weekend, October 23 to 25, 2026, with the weekend's listed events and a spot for the family photo.
For October 23 to 25, 2026.
Family & Friends Weekend at Northeastern University runs from mid-day Friday, October 23, to mid-day Sunday, October 25, 2026. The five buildings below have a wall that the sun lines up with on those days. Two are on the Boston campus, and three are a walk west of Huntington Avenue, by the Back Bay Fens and Fenway Park. Post your pictures with #HengeDays.
All times are US Eastern time. On Saturday the sun rises at 7:07 AM and sets at 5:48 PM. Every wall here gets golden light, with the sun 2 to 6 degrees up when it lines up. No wall in the area meets the sun at the horizon this weekend with a clear view.
The weekend's schedule and the light
Henge Days could not open the University's Family & Friends Weekend page for this guide. The dates and the events below come from search-engine summaries of that page on October 17, and those summaries list no times. Check the page for the schedule before you plan around it.
- Friday, October 23, morning: the program starts at mid-day. Sunrise is at 7:06 AM. Before the program starts, 142-148 Hemenway Street (entry 1) lines up at 7:34 AM, 4.2 degrees up, about 300 meters from Krentzman Quadrangle. It is the one morning wall this weekend.
- Friday, October 23, evening: the search results name no evening event. The evening walls line up between 5:18 PM (Bower, entry 5) and 5:31 PM (Renaissance Park Garage, entry 2), and the sun sets at 5:49 PM.
- During the weekend, with no days or times in the search results: a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, a tour of Fenway Park, a cappella performances and a Fall Festival. The museum is on Huntington Avenue, about 450 meters from Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral (entry 3). Fenway Park is about 400 meters from Bower (entry 5).
- Saturday, October 24: the evening walls line up between 5:19 PM (Bower) and 5:33 PM (Renaissance Park Garage), and the sun sets at 5:48 PM. Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral at 5:25 PM is the family photo spot below.
- Sunday, October 25, mid-day: the program ends. For families who stay, the three walls in Part 2 line up again between 5:21 and 5:27 PM. The two campus walls are in shade at their moments on Sunday.
Part 1: the Northeastern campus
Two walls on the campus have a clear view of the sun this weekend: one on the Fenway side for Friday morning, and one at Ruggles station on Columbus Avenue for Friday and Saturday evening.
1 142-148 Hemenway Street
Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts
- Wall
- east-southeast, facing 110°
- Sun
- The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Oct 23. Best: Friday, October 23 at 7:34 AM, 4.2° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- A forecast issued September 25 puts most of Massachusetts at peak around October 14, with the last places it covers on October 22 (More Than Just Parks). By Family Weekend that forecast has most of the state past peak.
- Where to stand
- The wall is the building's east side, which faces the paved walks behind it, away from Hemenway Street. Stand on the walk east-southeast of the middle of the wall, with the sun behind you, and frame the southern half. A neighboring building stands right in front of the northern end. On Friday the sun lines up with the wall at 7:34 AM, 4.2 degrees up. This is a golden day: at the head-on moment the sun is 2 to 6 degrees up. The New England Conservatory residence hall rises 3.8 degrees toward the sun in the outlines, so the light clears it on Friday only. On Saturday at 7:32 AM and Sunday at 7:30 AM the sun is 3.7 and 3.2 degrees up, below that roofline. This is a residence hall, so stay on the walks. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.
- Clear view
- Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (4.2° up) in its direction.
A Northeastern residence hall on Hemenway Street near Gainsborough Street, on the Fenway side of the campus, listed by that name on the University's move-in map (Northeastern Housing and Residential Life). A 1983 agreement with the city let Northeastern house students in these Hemenway Street apartments on the condition that low- and middle-income housing stays in the same buildings (The Huntington News). OpenStreetMap lists it as 142-148 Hemenway, so the building page shows that name.

2 Renaissance Park Garage
Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts
- Wall
- west-southwest, facing 252°
- Sun
- The low evening sun lines up with this wall on Oct 23 to 24. Best: Saturday, October 24 at 5:33 PM, 2.2° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- A forecast issued September 25 puts most of Massachusetts at peak around October 14, with the last places it covers on October 22 (More Than Just Parks). By Family Weekend that forecast has most of the state past peak.
- Where to stand
- The wall is the garage's short west-southwest end, facing Ruggles station. Stand on the walk between the garage and the station, west-southwest of the wall, with the sun behind you. Stay out of the garage drives. The sun lines up with the wall at 5:31 PM on Friday and 5:33 PM on Saturday, 2.7 and 2.2 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is 2 to 6 degrees up. A building toward the sun has no height in OpenStreetMap. The check assumed 9 meters and found its roofline at 2.0 degrees, under the sun on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday at 5:34 PM the sun is 1.7 degrees up, below it. If that building is taller than assumed, it takes the light sooner. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.
- Clear view
- Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (2.2° up) in its direction.
A public garage on the campus at 835 Columbus Avenue, at the corner of Melnea Cass Boulevard (Snell Library: getting to Snell Library). Ruggles station, on the Orange Line and the commuter rail, is next door, and the ISEC building and its bridge are a block northeast along Columbus Avenue. A family that drives in and parks here walks past this wall. OpenStreetMap spells it Rennaissance Parking Garage, so the building page shows that name.

Part 2: Huntington Avenue, the Fens and Fenway
The Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall and the Christian Science Plaza with its reflecting pool are on Huntington Avenue, within about 700 meters of the Curry Student Center. Between events, that stretch of the avenue is where to walk. None of those buildings has a wall the sun lines up with this weekend with a clear view. The west wall of the First Church of Christ, Scientist lines up, but the Church Park apartments stand in front of it at that moment. For the evening light, walk west from the museum along the Fens to the three walls below. The cathedral comes first, then Trilogy on Boylston Street and Bower on Maitland Street, near Fenway Park.
3 Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral
Fenway, Boston, Massachusetts
- Wall
- west-southwest, facing 251°
- Sun
- The low evening sun lines up with this wall on Oct 23 to 25. Best: Sunday, October 25 at 5:27 PM, 2.9° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- A forecast issued September 25 puts most of Massachusetts at peak around October 14, with the last places it covers on October 22 (More Than Just Parks). By Family Weekend that forecast has most of the state past peak. The trees along Park Drive and in the Fens frame the cathedral from the sidewalk.
- Where to stand
- The wall is the cathedral's west side, 28 meters long. The map shows drives on that side, so stand on the Park Drive sidewalk southwest of the cathedral, with the sun behind you, and frame the west wall at an angle. The sun lines up with the wall at 5:24 PM on Friday, 5:25 PM on Saturday and 5:27 PM on Sunday, 3.9, 3.4 and 2.9 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is 2 to 6 degrees up. Nothing in the outlines stands in the way. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.
- Clear view
- Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (2.9° up) in its direction.
A parish of the Orthodox Church in America at 165 Park Drive, between Fenway Park and the Museum of Fine Arts (Orthodox Church in America). Immigrants from the Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires founded it in 1910 as a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church (Pluralism Project). Park Drive runs along the western side of the Back Bay Fens.

Family photo spot. Stand the family on the Park Drive sidewalk south of Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, with its west wall behind them, turned partway toward the camera. The photographer stands farther west-southwest along the sidewalk, with the sun low behind and to one side, which lights faces and the cathedral's west wall in the same warm light. Go on Saturday at 5:25 PM or Sunday at 5:27 PM, when the sun is 3.4 and 2.9 degrees up. The Museum of Fine Arts is about 450 meters east. Post it with #HengeDays. An apartment block with shops on the ground floor, on Boylston Street between Brookline Avenue and Kilmarnock Street. Samuels & Associates built it in the Fenway Triangle (Banker & Tradesman), and Yardi Matrix lists it as completed in 2006 (Yardi Matrix). OpenStreetMap names it Fenway Triangle Trilogy, so the building page shows that name.

How the list was made
Henge Days computed every named building within 350 to 450 meters of 14 points: Centennial Common, Krentzman Quadrangle and Ell Hall, Snell Library and the ISEC building, Matthews Arena and St. Botolph Street, Cabot and Marino on Huntington Avenue, the Columbus Avenue halls, the West Village, Hemenway Street, the Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall and Massachusetts Avenue, the Christian Science Plaza, the Back Bay Fens and the Rose Garden, Fenway Park, and Berklee. It used OpenStreetMap outlines and kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Friday, October 23, to Sunday, October 25. That found 62 walls. It then traced the sun's path from each wall and checked it against all 1,192 outlines fetched for the 14 points, including the ones outside the wall's own circle. It dropped the walls where a building stands higher than the sun. Nine walls passed. Eight walls that look clear from inside one point's circle have a taller building a short way outside it, among them West Village H and the west wall of the First Church of Christ, Scientist.
Four of the nine are left out. The outline named Burstein Hall is 3.2 meters tall in the map data, too low to be the residence hall of that name at 458 Huntington Avenue. The west wall of MGM Music Hall faces the grounds of Fenway Park, and the map shows no public place to stand in front of it. The outline named Red Sox Team Store is a 12-meter strip, and on Sunday a building on Brookline Avenue rises to within 0.1 degrees of the sun. Star Market at Boylston and Kilmarnock Streets planned to move to a new building nearby (The Boston Globe), so its building may not stand as mapped. That leaves five, all golden days, and each entry says so.
Boston's streets run at several angles, but most of the campus and the Huntington Avenue blocks face 62, 152, 242 or 332 degrees. This weekend the sun rises at 105 degrees and sets at 254. Three long southwest fronts line up with the setting sun at the horizon later in the fall: the Museum of Fine Arts from November 15 to 20, the Curry Student Center from November 19 to 24 and Snell Library from November 21 to 27, 2026. Those days were not checked for buildings in front.
Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. Each entry names any building that rises toward the sun from in front of the wall. Where its outline carries no height, the check assumed 9 meters, and the entry says so. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine for the wall's own bearing.
How to read each entry
Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall. The Clear view line is the result of the check against every outline, on the best day with a clear view.
Any building has a page like the ones above, your student's hall included. Post your picture from one of these walls with #HengeDays.
