# Fall color and a low sun from the Shenandoah Valley to the Carolinas: twelve buildings to photograph, October 21 to 27, 2026

> Twelve buildings in the Shenandoah Valley, the Virginia Blue Ridge, the North Carolina mountains and the South Carolina Upstate where the sunrise or sunset lines up with a wall from October 21 to 27, as the leaves turn south and down the mountains.

This is the Markdown form of https://hengedays.com/articles/buildings-to-photograph-october-21-27-2026, with the same words as the page.

For October 21 to 27, 2026.

This week the color moves south and down the mountains. The ridge of Shenandoah National Park is at peak, the Virginia Blue Ridge and the valleys on both sides of it are turning, the Parkway in North Carolina holds its color through the weekend, and the Carolina foothills and the South Carolina Upstate are early. Northern New England is past peak, and the coast is still green.

Each building below has a wall that faces the rising or setting sun on some of these days. On those mornings or evenings the light falls square on the wall, with the trees around it lit from the same side. Each entry gives the wall, the days, the best time and where to stand, and a button opens the wall in Henge Days with its row in the Henge days list selected.

### How the list was made

Henge Days computed every named building within a few hundred meters of 64 town centers, campuses and estates in the Shenandoah Valley, the Virginia Blue Ridge, the North Carolina mountains and the South Carolina Upstate, from OpenStreetMap outlines. It kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Wednesday, October 21, to Tuesday, October 27. It then traced the sun's path from each wall and dropped the walls where a neighboring building stands higher than the sun. Most walls in town centers fail that test, which is why so many of these buildings face a lawn, a parade ground or a churchyard.

Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. In these mountains that matters more than it did in New England. Where a ridge rises toward the sun, the light reaches the wall later in the morning or leaves it earlier in the evening. The entries say where that applies. A henge day puts the sun on the horizon; a golden day puts it up to 6 degrees higher, which clears most low ridges.

### How to read each entry

Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall.

### Twelve buildings

#### 1 State Theatre

Culpeper, Virginia

Wall

east-southeast, facing 107°

Sun

The rising sun lines up with this wall on Oct 27. Best: Tuesday, October 27 at 7:42 AM, 1.3° above the horizon.

Leaves

Early to mid color in the Piedmont. A forecast updated October 15 puts most of Virginia at peak between October 22 and November 3, with the Blue Ridge ahead of the lowlands ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/virginia)).

Where to stand

The wall that lines up is the back of the theatre, away from the Main Street marquee, which faces west-northwest and gets no head-on sun. Stand behind the building, east-southeast of that wall, with the sun behind you. The light is golden every morning this week, and on Tuesday the sun lines up with the wall at the horizon, at 7:42 AM. Nothing in the outlines stands in the way.

A 1938 Art Deco movie house on Main Street, built for the Pitts theater chain to a design by Nicholas Roney. It closed in the 1990s, went to a foundation in 2006 and reopened in May 2013 after a restoration that kept the marquee. It is the only Art Deco building left in Culpeper.

#### 2 Fishburne Military School

Waynesboro, Virginia

Wall

east-southeast, facing 106°

Sun

The rising sun lines up with this wall on Oct 25 to 27. Best: Tuesday, October 27 at 7:40 AM, 0.5° above the horizon.

Leaves

The Blue Ridge above Waynesboro is at peak. A tracker updated October 15 forecasts the peak in Shenandoah National Park around October 20, with the lower slopes about a week behind ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/virginia/shenandoah-national-park)). The valley floor turns later.

Where to stand

The wall is the east front of the barracks, away from West 11th Street. Stand on the grounds east-southeast of it, with the sun behind you. The light is golden Wednesday to Sunday, 1.4 to 3.5 degrees up. From Sunday to Tuesday the sun lines up with the wall at the horizon, where a building across the street may take the first minutes; its outline has no height, so the check assumed one.

Virginia's oldest private military school, founded by James A. Fishburne in 1879. The brick barracks, castellated Gothic in the manner of VMI, was designed in 1916 by the Staunton architect T. J. Collins and replaced a wooden barracks razed in 1917. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

#### 3 White Star Mills

Where to stand

East-southeast of the mill, on the Mill Street side, with the sun behind you. Wednesday and Thursday only, with the sun on the horizon at about 7:34 AM. The hills east of Staunton can hold the first light for a few minutes, so a clear sky matters.

A brick flour mill of about 1892 at the east end of Staunton's Wharf district, beside the railroad. It was once the largest flour mill in the Shenandoah Valley, stopped milling in 1966 and holds a restaurant.

### Plan a trip of your own

- Search for a building, or tap one on the map, and pick the wall you want lit.
- The Henge days list shows the next days the sun lines up with that wall, at the horizon or in golden light, with the time.
- The Today tab shows the sun's path for one day and when it is square to each wall. Check the cloud forecast there before you go.
- Save a day to your [planner](https://hengedays.com/planner) to get a reminder and a calendar entry, or use [Along a street](https://hengedays.com/route) to find every wall that lines up along one road.

### The newsletter

Henge Days also has a newsletter. It covers what each release of the site adds and how to use it, and the buildings the #HengeDays community photographs in head-on light. [Read it on Substack](https://hengedays.substack.com/).

The address goes to Substack, which sends the email and asks you to confirm. Henge Days does not keep it.

---

Every date and time on Henge Days is computed from a building outline in OpenStreetMap and the position of the sun. Nobody has checked it on the ground. Hills, trees and other buildings can block a low sun. Treat each date as a plan to confirm before you travel. See https://hengedays.com/terms.md. Henge Days is free to use; sign in only to save days to a planner. Contact: hello@hengedays.com.
