# Fall color from Richmond to Tidewater and the Piedmont: eleven buildings to photograph, October 28 to November 3, 2026

> Eleven buildings in Richmond, Petersburg, Tidewater and the Virginia and North Carolina Piedmont where the sunrise or sunset lines up with a wall from October 28 to November 3, 2026, the week the leaves peak in central Virginia and the clocks go back.

This is the Markdown form of https://hengedays.com/articles/buildings-to-photograph-october-28-november-3-2026, with the same words as the page.

*The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the first building in the list, in Henge Days. Pink marks the wall the sunrise lines up with on Tuesday, November 3, the first of the mornings that lead to its sunrise henge on November 17.*

For October 28 to November 3, 2026.

This week the color reaches the lowlands. Richmond and the Virginia Piedmont peak between the end of October and the first days of November, the Tidewater towns are a week behind, and the North Carolina Piedmont turns in the same days with less color than usual after a dry summer. The mountains are past peak. Each building below has a wall that faces the rising or setting sun on some of these days, with the trees around it lit from the same side. Post what you shoot with #HengeDays, with the building's name and the date.

The clocks go back on Sunday, November 1. Times through Saturday, October 31, are Eastern Daylight Time, with the golden mornings at about 8 AM and the golden evenings at about 5:40 PM. Times from Sunday on are Eastern Standard Time, so the morning walls light up a few minutes before 7 AM from then on and the evening walls before 5 PM. Each entry gives the wall, the days, the best time and where to stand, and a button opens the wall in Henge Days with its row in the Henge days list selected.

### Part 1: Richmond and Petersburg

Richmond's walls face the Fan and the Boulevard, where the sunrise comes up the cross streets. Two of them stand on Arthur Ashe Boulevard, the street of the November 17 sunrise walk, and this week is a rehearsal for it. Petersburg, 40 kilometers south, adds a campus and a station.

#### 1 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Richmond, Virginia

Wall

east-southeast, facing 114°

Sun

The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Nov 3. Best: Tuesday, November 3 at 7:11 AM, 5.7° above the horizon.

Leaves

Richmond peaks this week. A forecast updated October 22 puts most of Virginia at peak between October 23 and November 4 ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/virginia)), and a second forecast puts Richmond's peak around November 2, in a window from October 31 to November 8 ([Leaves.com](https://leaves.com/foliage/virginia/)). The oaks along the Boulevard turn after the maples in the Fan.

Where to stand

Stand on the Boulevard's east sidewalk or on the museum's front lawn, east-southeast of the 1936 front, with the sun behind you. On Tuesday, November 3, the sun lines up with the wall at 7:11 AM Eastern Standard Time, 5.7 degrees up. The row houses across the Boulevard rise to 5.4 degrees from the wall, so the light clears their roofs by a hair that morning and by more on each morning after it until the henge on the 17th.

Clear view

Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (5.7° up) in its direction.

The museum's original building opened on January 16, 1936, designed by Peebles and Ferguson of Norfolk in the English Renaissance manner of Christopher Wren, with limestone to the second floor and red Virginia brick above ([VMFA](https://vmfa.museum/about/history-of-the-museum/), [SAH Archipedia](https://sah-archipedia.org/buildings/VA-01-RI307)). That front faces Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Its sunrise henge is November 17, the morning of the first Henge Days walk in Richmond, and this week the sun begins its approach to the wall.

The park's oaks and maples are at or near peak this week, on the forecasts above for Richmond ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/virginia), [Leaves.com](https://leaves.com/foliage/virginia/)). The lawn in front of the Carillon is open, so the trees frame the tower from the sides.

Where to stand

Stand on the lawn east-southeast of the tower, in the park, with the sun behind you. The light is golden on every morning of the week, from about 5 degrees up on Wednesday down to 3 degrees on Tuesday, November 3, when the sun lines up with the east face at 6:56 AM Eastern Standard Time. Nothing in the outlines stands in the way. The tower is tall, so step back far enough to take in the whole shaft.

#### 3 Movieland

Richmond, Virginia

Wall

east-southeast, facing 114°

Sun

The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Nov 2 to 3. Best: Tuesday, November 3 at 7:08 AM, 5.2° above the horizon.

Leaves

Scott's Addition has few trees, so the color here is in the brick. For leaves, walk south on the Boulevard to the Fan and the Museum District, at peak this week on the Richmond forecasts ([Leaves.com](https://leaves.com/foliage/virginia/)).

Where to stand

The long east wall runs along the Boulevard. Stand on the east sidewalk of Arthur Ashe Boulevard, across from the foundry, with the sun behind you. The light is golden on Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3, when the sun lines up with the wall at 7:08 AM Eastern Standard Time, 5.2 degrees up. Nothing in the outlines stands between the wall and the sunrise. Stay on the sidewalk; the Boulevard is busy at that hour.

The movie theater at 1301 North Arthur Ashe Boulevard is the iron foundry of the Richmond Locomotive and Machine Works, in use by 1887 and enlarged in 1917. The works built steam locomotives here until 1927, the plant made specialty steel until 2006, and the foundry reopened as a cinema in 2009 after a rehabilitation that kept the brick walls and the steel frame ([National Park Service](https://home.nps.gov/articles/richmond-locomotive-va.htm), [Clio](https://theclio.com/entry/177868)). The complex went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

The Norfolk and Western built this Colonial Revival station at 103 River Street in 1909 and 1910, to a design from its chief engineer's office in Roanoke, after a flood damaged the one before it. The Atlantic Coast Line used it too, passenger trains stopped in 1971, and Amtrak came back for two years in the 1970s. The City of Petersburg owns it and rents it for events, and it is a contributing building of the Old Town historic district ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petersburg_Union_Station), [Clio](https://theclio.com/entry/46371)).

### Part 2: Tidewater

Tidewater is flat, so the horizon is close to level and the computed times hold. The three walls below run from the oldest building at Fort Monroe to a 1992 university library, and all three are golden mornings or evenings rather than henges: the one henge the scout found, the river face of the Norfolk World Trade Center, is left out for the reason given at the end.

The Bedford Boys of the 116th Infantry left from here in February 1941. Passenger trains stopped in 1971, a restaurant opened in the depot in 2001, and after a fire in September 2009 the stone walls were all that stood; the restaurant reopened in them in February 2010 ([National Trust for Historic Preservation](https://savingplaces.org/stories/all-aboard-train-depots-turned-restaurants), [Olde Liberty Station](https://www.oldelibertystation.com/history)).

#### 11 Blackstone Baptist Church

Blackstone, Virginia

Wall

east-southeast, facing 111°

Sun

The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Oct 28 to Nov 3. Best: Tuesday, November 3 at 6:55 AM, 2.6° above the horizon.

Leaves

Nottoway County peaks in the last days of October and the first of November on the forecast updated October 22 ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/virginia)). Main Street's trees are at peak this week.

Where to stand

The front faces Main Street. Stand on the east sidewalk of South Main Street, across from the church, with the sun behind you. The light is golden on every morning of the week, at about 8 AM Eastern Daylight Time through Saturday and a few minutes before 7 AM Eastern Standard Time from Sunday. The best is Tuesday, November 3, at 6:55 AM, with the sun 2.6 degrees up. Nothing in the outlines stands in the way. The armory on North High Street, in the list below, lines up on the same mornings.

Clear view

Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (2.6° up) in its direction.

The congregation voted to build this church within a week of Lacy Milton Ritter's arrival as pastor in June 1906, and dedicated it on June 19, 1910, at a cost of 11,000 dollars with the furnishings ([Baptist News Global](https://baptistnews.com/article/heritagenewbeginnings/)). It stands at 405 South Main Street in Blackstone, a railroad town of the 1880s whose Main Street is a Virginia Main Street community and a National Register historic district ([National Park Service](https://www.nps.gov/NR/travel/vamainstreet/blackstone.htm)).

### How the list was made

Henge Days computed every named building within 400 to 450 meters of 70 town centers, campuses and estates in Richmond and Petersburg, in Tidewater from Williamsburg and Fort Monroe to the Northern Neck and the Eastern Shore, and in the Piedmont from Fredericksburg and Warrenton through Lynchburg, Farmville and Danville to Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and Winston-Salem, from OpenStreetMap outlines. It kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Wednesday, October 28, to Tuesday, November 3. It then traced the sun's path from each wall and dropped the walls where a neighboring building stands higher than the sun. Where a wall's view ran past the edge of the searched area, a second search covered the ground toward the sun before the wall became a pick.

Most walls in the dense centers fail that test, which is why so many of these buildings face a lawn, a boulevard or a river. Downtown Richmond, Jackson Ward, Manchester, Norfolk's Granby Street, Yorktown, downtown Lynchburg, Danville, Greensboro and Hillsborough had no named wall with a clear view this week. Six walls that line up were dropped on a closer check: the river face of the Norfolk World Trade Center lines up at the horizon on three evenings, but the building's page draws its outline without that wall, so a link could not open it; Saint Mary Star of the Sea at Fort Monroe, Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Suffolk and the Center for the Arts at Elon stand behind buildings whose outlines carry no height, and the heights the check assumed for them rise above the sun; at Brooks Hall at NC State and the Memorial Chapel at Sweet Briar the sun clears the roofline from the middle of the wall but grazes it so flat that no stretch of the wall is lit. A few more are left out under the access rule: the Ragland Mansion in Petersburg and the Holladay House in Orange are inns, Blackwell House at Randolph-Macon and Katherine House at Hampton University are named like homes, and the fraternity houses at the University of Richmond and Hampden-Sydney are homes. The Old Salem outline in Winston-Salem is the district boundary, which OpenStreetMap does not tag as a building.

Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. That holds in Tidewater and in Richmond. In the Piedmont, where a ridge rises toward the sun, the light reaches a wall later in the morning or leaves it earlier in the evening, and the entries say where that applies. Where a neighboring outline carries no height, the check estimated one from the building type, and the text says so. A henge day puts the sun on the horizon; a golden day puts it up to 6 degrees higher. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine for the wall's own bearing, in Eastern Daylight Time through October 31 and Eastern Standard Time from November 1.

### How to read each entry

Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall.

### Plan a trip of your own

- Search for a building, or tap one on the map, and pick the wall you want lit.
- The Henge days list shows the next days the sun lines up with that wall, at the horizon or in golden light, with the time.
- The Today tab shows the sun's path for one day and when it is square to each wall. Check the cloud forecast there before you go.
- Save a day to your [planner](https://hengedays.com/planner) to get a reminder and a calendar entry, or use [Along a street](https://hengedays.com/route) to find every wall that lines up along one road.

Post your picture from one of these walls with #HengeDays.

### The newsletter

Henge Days also has a newsletter. It covers what each release of the site adds and how to use it, and the buildings the #HengeDays community photographs in head-on light. [Read it on Substack](https://hengedays.substack.com/).

The address goes to Substack, which sends the email and asks you to confirm. Henge Days does not keep it.

Every date and time on Henge Days is computed from a building outline in OpenStreetMap and the position of the sun. Nobody has checked it on the ground. Hills, trees and other buildings can block a low sun. Treat each date as a plan to confirm before you travel. See https://hengedays.com/terms.md. Henge Days is free to use; sign in only to save days to a planner. Contact: hello@hengedays.com.
