University of Georgia Family Weekend, November 5 to 8, 2026: four buildings to photograph on campus and in downtown Athens
Four walls at the University of Georgia and in Five Points that line up with the morning sun during Family Weekend, November 5 to 8, 2026, with three more in higher morning light, what the published schedule shows, and a spot for the family photo.
For November 5 to 8, 2026.
Family Weekend at the University of Georgia runs from Thursday, November 5, to Sunday, November 8, 2026. The four buildings below have a wall that faces the low morning sun on those days: three on the campus and one in Five Points, south of the campus. Three more walls get the sun a little higher, 6 to 10 degrees up. Post your pictures with #HengeDays.
Every time in this guide is US Eastern Standard Time (EST). Daylight saving time ends on November 1, so the clocks have already changed by Family Weekend. All four picks are morning walls, between 7:23 and 7:31 AM EST.
The weekend's schedule
The University's Family Weekend pages did not load from where this guide was written, so the dates and the status of the schedule come from search results that summarized those pages on October 17. The FAQ page gives the dates as Thursday, November 5, to Sunday, November 8, 2026, and says the schedule details are to be posted later. The schedule page in the same results still showed the 2025 events. No 2026 event is named here for that reason. The full schedule is in the Welcome to UGA app under Family Weekend, and at families.uga.edu. The list below gives the light for each day.
- Thursday, November 5, the first day: Church Hall at 7:28 AM, the Dining, Learning and Well-being Center at 7:30 AM and Boggs Hall at 7:31 AM, all golden light. The three are within about 150 m of each other, so one walk covers them before the day's events.
- Friday, November 6: Church Hall at 7:26 AM, the Dining, Learning and Well-being Center and Boggs Hall at 7:29 AM. In Five Points, the apartment building on South Lumpkin Street at 7:30 AM.
- Saturday, November 7: Church Hall at 7:25 AM, the Dining, Learning and Well-being Center at 7:27 AM, Boggs Hall at 7:28 AM and the Five Points wall at 7:29 AM. This is the best morning for the family photo spot below.
- Sunday, November 8, the last day: the lowest sun of the weekend at every wall. Church Hall at 7:23 AM, the Dining, Learning and Well-being Center and Boggs Hall at 7:26 AM, and the Five Points wall at 7:27 AM.
- Evenings: no wall on the campus or downtown lines up with the evening sun with a clear view and a public place to stand. The late afternoon and evening are free for downtown, described in Part 2.
Part 1: the campus
The three campus walls are side by side on the south part of the campus, between the Baxter Street residence halls and South Lumpkin Street, about 1 km south of the Arch. All three face east-southeast across campus walks.
1 Dining, Learning and Well-being Center
University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia
- Wall
- east-southeast, facing 113°
- Sun
- The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Nov 5 to 8. Best: Sunday, November 8 at 7:26 AM, 4.5° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- Athens is in north-central Georgia. The Georgia Forestry Commission's outlook puts that region's peak in late October into early November (FOX 5 Atlanta). A forecast issued September 25 puts peak color around November 12 in most of Georgia (More Than Just Parks).
- Where to stand
- The wall is the building's east end, 31 m, facing the walks on the building's east side. Stand on the campus walks east-southeast of the wall, with the sun behind you, and stay out of University Court and any service drive. The sun lines up with the wall at 7:30 AM EST on Thursday, 7:29 AM on Friday, 7:27 AM on Saturday and 7:26 AM on Sunday, 5.9, 5.4, 5.0 and 4.5 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is up to 6 degrees up. Dawson Hall rises toward the sun, but its roofline is at 1.3 degrees, below the sun on all four days. The whole 31 m of the wall is lit. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.
A dining commons with classrooms and health services, at University Court and East Cloverhurst Avenue, south of the Baxter Street residence halls. When the Board of Regents approved it in 2023, the plan put a dining commons of about 800 seats on the first two floors, classrooms, a health center clinic and nutrition counseling on the third, and an opening for students in fall 2026 (WUGA). Henge Days could not confirm on October 17 that the building had opened. If construction fencing still closes the walks on its east side, photograph the wall from the public sidewalk and take the family picture elsewhere.

Family photo spot. Stand the family on the walks a few steps out from the east wall of the Dining, Learning and Well-being Center, turned partway toward the camera. The photographer stands east-southeast of them, with the sun low behind and to one side, which lights faces and the wall behind them in the same warm light. Go on Saturday at 7:27 AM or Sunday at 7:26 AM, when the sun is lowest, 5.0 and 4.5 degrees up. The whole wall is lit, and it is the longest lit wall in this list. Post it with #HengeDays. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.

Part 2: downtown Athens and Five Points
Downtown Athens starts across Broad Street from the Arch. College Avenue runs north from the Arch past City Hall at 301 College Avenue, and Clayton Street and Washington Street cross it. The Georgia Theatre is at 215 North Lumpkin Street and the Morton Theatre at 195 West Washington Street. The Classic Center is at 300 North Thomas Street, on the east side of downtown. Downtown is the place to walk and eat between events and in the evenings, but no downtown wall makes the list. The downtown walls that line up this weekend, among them Lark Athens on the east side and the Hull Street Parking Deck, have a taller building toward the sun at that moment. Five Points is about 2 km south-southwest of the Arch, where Lumpkin Street meets Milledge Avenue.
4 The apartment building on South Lumpkin Street in Five Points
Athens, Georgia
- Wall
- east-southeast, facing 114°
- Sun
- The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Nov 6 to 8. Best: Sunday, November 8 at 7:27 AM, 4.8° above the horizon.
- Leaves
- The Georgia Forestry Commission's outlook puts north-central Georgia's peak in late October into early November (FOX 5 Atlanta).
- Where to stand
- The wall is the building's front on South Lumpkin Street, 32 m long. Stand on the public sidewalk of South Lumpkin Street, east-southeast of the wall, with the sun behind you. Stay off the lawn, the walks to the doors and the parking, and out of the street. The sun lines up with the wall at 7:30 AM EST on Friday, 7:29 AM on Saturday and 7:27 AM on Sunday, 5.8, 5.3 and 4.8 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is up to 6 degrees up. On Thursday the sun is higher than 6 degrees at that moment. The sun reaches 11 m of the 32 m wall. A house toward the sun has no height in OpenStreetMap, and with an estimated height its roofline is at 1.5 degrees, below the sun on all three days. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position, and not checked on the ground.
A three-story apartment building on the west side of South Lumpkin Street in Five Points, near Local 706 and The Expat. OpenStreetMap gives it no name or address. Five Points is the neighborhood of shops and restaurants where Lumpkin Street meets Milledge Avenue, about 2 km south-southwest of the Arch. It is someone's home: photograph it from the public sidewalk only.

Low sun
These walls pass the check for other buildings with the sun 6 to 10 degrees up at the head-on moment. That is higher than golden light, and the light is still warm and falls square on the wall. All three are on the campus. Each name opens the wall in Henge Days.
- Sanford Stadium, the football stadium: its east side on East Campus Road, 54 m, faces 116 degrees. It gets the sun 6 to 10 degrees up at its moment: 7:43 AM EST on Thursday, 7:42 AM on Friday, 7:40 AM on Saturday and 7:39 AM on Sunday, 8.4, 7.9, 7.4 and 7.0 degrees up. The whole 54 m is lit, and nothing in the outlines stands in the way. Stand on the sidewalk on the far side of East Campus Road, east-southeast of the wall, and stay out of the road. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.
- Georgia Museum of Art, on the East Campus by the Lamar Dodd School of Art: its east-southeast walls, 83 m in five sections, face 117 degrees. It gets the sun 6 to 10 degrees up at its moment: 7:49 AM EST on Thursday, 7:47 AM on Friday, 7:46 AM on Saturday and 7:44 AM on Sunday, 9.4, 8.9, 8.4 and 8.0 degrees up. The sun reaches 72 m of the 83 m. The Lamar Dodd School of Art has no height in OpenStreetMap, and with an estimated height its roofline is at 5.8 degrees, below the sun on all four days. Stand on the campus walks east-southeast of the building. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.
- Hugh Hodgson School of Music, next to the Georgia Museum of Art on the East Campus: its east wall, 91 m, faces 117 degrees toward River Road. It gets the sun under 10 degrees up only on the last two days: 7:53 AM EST on Saturday and 7:52 AM on Sunday, 9.8 and 9.4 degrees up. The sun reaches 87 m of the 91 m, and nothing in the outlines stands in the way. Stand on the walk or the lawn east-southeast of the wall, or on the River Road Multiuse Path, and stay out of River Road. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.
How the list was made
Henge Days computed every named building with a wall of 8 m or more, and every unnamed building with a wall of 20 m or more, within 300 to 450 meters of 17 points. On the campus: North Campus and the Arch, Herty Field and the Main Library, Park Hall and Founders Memorial Garden, Sanford Stadium and the Tate Student Center, the Miller Learning Center, the Science Library and the South Lumpkin Street halls, the Baxter Street halls and the East Campus. In town: Broad Street and College Avenue, the Washington Street theatres, Clayton Street, the Classic Center, West Broad Street, Prince Avenue, East Broad Street and Oconee Street, Dougherty Street and Five Points. It used OpenStreetMap outlines. It kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 10 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Thursday, November 5, to Sunday, November 8. It then traced the sun's path from each wall and dropped the walls where a neighboring building stands higher than the sun. For each wall kept, a second search 400 m out along the sun's path checked for a building beyond the first search. That check dropped Chicopee Building 8 on Oconee Street.
Four days in early November is a short window, and most of the campus and downtown face the wrong way for it. This weekend the head-on sun stands at about 113 degrees in the morning and 247 degrees in the evening. The Chapel, Old College, Demosthenian Hall, the Main Library, Park Hall, Baldwin Hall, the Tate Student Center, the Miller Learning Center, the Science Library, City Hall and the two theatres have no wall the sun lines up with on these days. Dean Rusk Hall on North Campus, Lark Athens and the Hull Street Parking Deck line up at sunset, but taller buildings stand toward the sun at that moment. That leaves four picks.
Some walls that line up are left out by the rules for where to stand. Two apartment buildings on South Newton Street, west of the campus, line up at sunset, but their west sides face open ground that the map does not show as a public sidewalk or park. An unnamed building of 51 m north of downtown lines up at sunset, but the map shows only a private drive and grounds in front of it. In the low-sun group, a commercial building on the North Oconee River off Wilkerson Street and Butler's Automotive in Five Points face their own lots. The Alpha Omicron Pi house in Five Points is a sorority house, a home. Stegeman Coliseum showed up in the first pass but did not keep a day in the range in the second check.
Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. The land east of the campus falls toward the North Oconee River, and the East Campus walls face the river valley, so trees on the far bank can hold back the sun for the first minutes. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine, for the building outlines in OpenStreetMap.
How to read each entry
Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall.
Any building has a page like the ones above, your student's hall included. Whatever you shoot, post it with #HengeDays.
