For a level horizon, the sun rises in Lowell at 7:08 to 7:10 AM and sets at 5:50 to 5:47 PM, Friday to Sunday. All three entries are evening walls with golden light, the sun 2 to 6 degrees up at their moment. Every time in this guide is Eastern Daylight Time.

### The weekend's schedule and the light

The events below are the ones UMass Lowell's Family Weekend pages, the [registration page](https://uml.campusesp.com/events/familyweekend2026) and [uml.edu/family](https://www.uml.edu/family/familyweekend.aspx), and the university's ticket pages listed in search results on October 17, 2026. The university's own pages could not be opened from where this guide was written, so the list comes from those search summaries, and they do not give the full schedule. The hockey time is from the [River Hawks schedule](https://goriverhawks.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/schedule/text). Check times and places on the Family Weekend pages before you plan around them. The weekend runs from 8:00 AM Friday to 4:00 PM Sunday.

- Friday, October 23, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM: the River Hawk Shop on the first floor of the Meehan Student Center, the former University Crossing. No wall lines up with the sunrise this weekend with a clear view. The low morning sun is square to the east side of the Costello Athletic Center on North Campus at 8:40 AM, 14.8 degrees up (Part 1).

Appleton Mills (entry 2) lines up at 5:09 PM and the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub (entry 3) at 5:10 PM, their one golden day this weekend. The auditorium follows at 5:23 PM, about 800 m east of Appleton Mills.
- The Taste the Acre Food Tour is one of the weekend's ticketed events and is listed as sold out, with a waitlist through family@uml.edu. The search results give no time for it.

### Part 1: the UMass Lowell campuses

No wall on North, South or East Campus lines up with the sun within 6 degrees of the horizon this weekend with a clear view. The section How the list was made gives the reasons. Three campus walls get the low sun square a little higher, with nothing in the outlines in front of their longest sections. Each name opens the building in Henge Days. The times are the moment the sun is square to the wall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

- [Health and Social Sciences Building](https://hengedays.com/at/42.64219,-71.33375?q=Health+and+Social+Sciences+Building%2C+113+Wilder+Street%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F371247321), 113 Wilder Street on South Campus: the west-southwest wall, 30 m facing 247 degrees, at 5:05, 5:06 and 5:07 PM, 7.1, 6.6 and 6.2 degrees up. It gets golden light from Monday, October 26, to November 9, and the sun sets square to it at the horizon from November 5 to 9.
- [Allen House](https://hengedays.com/at/42.64267,-71.33587?q=Allen+House%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F214338779), on South Campus west of the Health and Social Sciences Building: the west-southwest wall, 39 m in several sections facing 246 degrees, at 5:00, 5:01 and 5:03 PM, 7.9, 7.4 and 7.0 degrees up. The longest section is 13 m. One 6 m section faces Sheehy Hall, and the rest have nothing in the outlines in front of them. Golden light from October 27 to November 11, and the sun sets square to it at the horizon from November 7 to 11.
- [Costello Athletic Center](https://hengedays.com/at/42.65553,-71.32413?q=Costello+Athletic+Center%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F107273947), on North Campus: the east-southeast wall, 48 m facing 122 degrees, at 8:40, 8:39 and 8:38 AM, 14.8, 14.4 and 13.9 degrees up. Its longest section is 36 m. Golden morning light from November 14 to December 13, 2026, and again from December 30, 2026, to January 27, 2027.

### Part 2: downtown Lowell

Downtown Lowell begins at City Hall, about 1 km east of the Meehan Student Center along Merrimack Street. Merrimack Street and Central Street hold most of the shops and restaurants. The Boott Cotton Mills Museum of Lowell National Historical Park and the canal walks are north of Merrimack Street. Between Saturday's lunch and the evening, or after Sunday's brunch, the museum and the walk along the canals fill the afternoon. The three walls below are the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on East Merrimack Street and two mill buildings in the Hamilton Canal District, west of Central Street.

#### 1 Lowell Memorial Auditorium

Lowell, Massachusetts

Wall

west-southwest, facing 250°

Sun

The low evening sun lines up with this wall on Oct 23 to 25. Best: Sunday, October 25 at 5:23 PM, 3.6° above the horizon.

Leaves

A forecast issued September 25 put peak color in most of Massachusetts around October 14, moving across the state over about 17 days ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/massachusetts)). The state's map expected the peak in mid-October ([Massachusetts DCR](https://www.mass.gov/news/dcr-unveils-2026-interactive-fall-foliage-map)).

Where to stand

The wall is the building's west side, 31 m in two sections, facing the Concord River. Stand on the walks west of the auditorium, between the building and the river, west-southwest of the wall, with the sun behind you. Stay out of the drives. The sun lines up with the wall at 5:20 PM on Friday, 5:22 PM on Saturday and 5:23 PM on Sunday, 4.5, 4.0 and 3.6 degrees up. These are golden days: at the head-on moment the sun is 2 to 6 degrees up. The southern section, 11 m, has nothing in the outlines in front of it. In front of the northern section, 20 m, the Cowan Center rises 2.9 degrees in the outlines, under the sun on all three days. Its height is an estimate. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.

Clear view

Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (3.6° up) in its direction.

The city's memorial to those who served in the First World War, on East Merrimack Street beside the Concord River. A Lowell Board of Trade resolution of December 10, 1918, called for it, and it was dedicated on September 21, 1922. It seats about 2,800. Its entry hall, the Hall of Flags, holds memorials that list battles from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf wars ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_Memorial_Auditorium), [Lowell Memorial Auditorium](https://lowellauditorium.com/history/)). The nearest parking is a small lot on Davidson Street, across East Merrimack Street, and a garage at 90 Warren Street, a short walk across a footbridge ([Lowell Memorial Auditorium](https://lowellauditorium.com/?p=97088)). The Boott Cotton Mills Museum is about 360 m north-northwest.

### When the landmarks line up

The buildings a family asks about first do not face this weekend's low sun with a clear view. Their next days, from the same engine. These dates do not include the check for other buildings.

- [Tsongas Center](https://hengedays.com/at/42.65029,-71.31318?q=Tsongas+Center%2C+300+Martin+Luther+King+Jr+Way%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F34088795): the east-southeast wall, 82 m facing 123 degrees, gets golden morning light from November 19, 2026, to January 22, 2027, with the sun at the horizon from December 11 to 31.
- [Meehan Student Center](https://hengedays.com/at/42.65013,-71.32390?q=University+Crossing%2C+220+Pawtucket+Street%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F477047747), listed in OpenStreetMap as University Crossing: the east-southeast wall, 67 m facing 122 degrees, gets golden morning light from November 15 to December 18, 2026, with the sun at the horizon from December 2 to 18.
- [Olney Hall](https://hengedays.com/at/42.65543,-71.32538?q=Olney+Hall%2C+265+Riverside+Street%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F34098642), on North Campus: the east-southeast wall, 114 m facing 109 degrees, gets golden morning light from October 23 to 31, with the sun at the horizon from October 28 to 31. The ground in front of it is a construction site this fall.
- [Boott Cotton Mills](https://hengedays.com/at/42.64797,-71.30729?q=Boott+Cotton+Mills%2C+115+John+Street%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Frelation%2F3585804): the east-southeast walls, 191 m facing 122 degrees, get golden morning light from November 16, 2026, to January 25, 2027, with the sun at the horizon from December 5, 2026, to January 7, 2027.
- [Lowell City Hall](https://hengedays.com/at/42.64640,-71.31415?q=Lowell+City+Hall%2C+375+Merrimack+Street%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F127798987), 375 Merrimack Street: the east-southeast wall, 50 m facing 124 degrees, gets golden morning light from November 20, 2026, to January 21, 2027, with the sun at the horizon from December 14 to 29.
- [Coburn Hall](https://hengedays.com/at/42.64121,-71.33384?q=Coburn+Hall%2C+850+Broadway+Street%2C+Lowell%2C+MA&b=osm%2Fway%2F138068111), on South Campus: the west-southwest wall, 35 m facing 253 degrees, lines up with the sunset this weekend, but Mahoney Hall stands in front of it at that moment. It lines up again from February 12 to 24, 2027.

### How the list was made

Henge Days computed every named building within 300 to 450 meters of 14 points: three on North Campus, the Meehan Student Center, East Campus, the Tsongas Center, two on South Campus, the Pawtucket Canal, Merrimack Street, the Boott Cotton Mills, the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, Central Street and Middlesex Street. It used OpenStreetMap outlines. It kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Friday, October 23, to Sunday, October 25. It then traced the sun's path from each section of each wall, against every outline from all 14 points and against the wall's own building, and dropped the walls where a building stands higher than the sun.

Three days is a short window. This weekend the sun rises at 105 to 106 degrees and sets at 254 to 255. About 25 walls of named buildings line up within 6 degrees of the horizon, and most have a neighbor in the way at that moment. On South Campus, Mahoney Hall stands in front of Coburn Hall, and the South Parking Garage in front of Mahoney Hall. On East Campus, the Campus Recreation Center stands in front of Fox Hall. In the Hamilton Canal District, Appleton Mills stands in front of Counting House Lofts, and the Picker and Power House in front of the Worsted Mill.

Four more walls pass the check on the outlines and are left out. The west-southwest wall of Durgin Hall, the Moloney Performing Arts Center since 2024 ([UMass Lowell](https://www.uml.edu/news/stories/2024/moloney-performing-arts-center.aspx)), sits in a corner and faces its own west wing 14 m away. Olney Hall's east side lines up at 7:31, 7:29 and 7:28 AM, but the ground between Olney, Pinanski Hall and the Costello Athletic Center is fenced for the new science wing, due to open for the fall 2027 semester ([UMass Lowell](https://www.uml.edu/news/stories/2025/olney-expansion-begins.aspx), [UMass Lowell](https://www.uml.edu/news/stories/2026/summer-facilities-work.aspx)). The Tsongas Center's short west wall faces Wannalancit Mills, which the check assumed at three stories. UMass Lowell describes the mill as five stories ([UMass Lowell](https://www.uml.edu/research/otc/contact/directions.aspx)). The east wall of the F. Bradford Morse Federal Building faces the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, also assumed at three stories, a hall that seats about 2,800. That leaves three entries, all downtown and all evening walls, and the list stops there.

Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. Trees along the canals and the Concord River can shade a wall in the last minutes. Where a neighboring outline carries no height, the check assumed about three stories, and each entry says so. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine for the wall's own bearing, in Eastern Daylight Time, or Eastern Standard Time from November 1.

### How to read each entry

Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall. The Clear view line is the result of the check for other buildings on the best day.

Any building has a page like the ones above, your student's hall included. Whatever you shoot, post it with #HengeDays:

### The newsletter

Henge Days also has a newsletter. It covers what each release of the site adds and how to use it, and the buildings the #HengeDays community photographs in head-on light. [Read it on Substack](https://hengedays.substack.com/).

The address goes to Substack, which sends the email and asks you to confirm. Henge Days does not keep it.

---

Every date and time on Henge Days is computed from a building outline in OpenStreetMap and the position of the sun. Nobody has checked it on the ground. Hills, trees and other buildings can block a low sun. Treat each date as a plan to confirm before you travel. See https://hengedays.com/terms.md. Henge Days is free to use; sign in only to save days to a planner. Contact: hello@hengedays.com.
