All times are US Eastern time (Eastern Daylight Time). In Kingston the sun rises at 7:07 to 7:09 AM and sets at 5:52 to 5:50 PM, Friday to Sunday. All four walls get golden light, with the sun 1.6 to 5.3 degrees up when it lines up. No wall in Kingston village, Wakefield or Narragansett Pier lines up this weekend with a clear view, so Part 2 has the sunrise at the beach and the village walk.

### The weekend's schedule and the light

Henge Days could not open the University's pages for this guide. The events below come from search-engine summaries, on October 17, of the University's [Family Weekend page](https://web.uri.edu/studentinvolvement/family-weekend/), its [events calendar](https://events.uri.edu/event/family-weekend-2026), its [news release of October 15](https://www.uri.edu/news/2026/10/next-stop-pawtucket-family-weekend-delivers-creative-twist-for-2026-amidst-meade-stadium-renovations/) and the [Ryan Center's ticket page](https://theryancenter.com/sports/2026/4/2/2024-family-weekend-ticket-information.aspx). Those summaries do not hold the full schedule. Check the pages for times and places before you plan around them.

### Part 1: the URI campus

Four walls on three buildings, in the order a day runs: two for the morning, at the Fine Arts Center and the Ryan Center, and two for the evening, at the Ryan Center and Brookside on Flagg Road.

#### 1 Fine Arts Center

University of Rhode Island, Kingston, Rhode Island

Wall

east-southeast, facing 108°

Sun

The low morning sun lines up with this wall on Oct 23 to 25. Best: Sunday, October 25 at 7:21 AM, 1.6° above the horizon.

Leaves

A forecast of September 25 from More Than Just Parks puts peak color in most of Rhode Island around October 19, a few days before the weekend ([More Than Just Parks](https://morethanjustparks.com/foliage-tracker/rhode-island)).

Where to stand

The wall is in two short sections that face east-southeast, 16 m in all: 9 m at the east end of the building and 7 m in a corner on the south side, where a footpath comes up from the south. Stand on that footpath, south-southeast of the corner section, and frame it at an angle, with the sun behind your right shoulder. Stay out of the parking lot east of the building. The sun lines up with the wall at 7:24 AM on Friday, 7:22 AM on Saturday and 7:21 AM on Sunday, 2.5, 2.1 and 1.6 degrees up. These are golden days with the sun low: Henge Days counts the light as golden from 1.5 to 6 degrees up. Nothing in the outlines stands in the way. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground.

Clear view

Clear. No building in the map data rises above the sun (1.6° up) in its direction.

The home of the University's art, music and theatre programs, at 105 Upper College Road on the east side of the campus. In 2024 the University described it as 56 years old and marked a milestone in its overhaul, paid for in part by a bond of $57.3 million that voters approved in 2021 ([URI](https://uri.edu/news/2024/09/uri-to-celebrate-milestone-in-fine-arts-center-renovation)). The University cut the ribbon on the renovated center and its new academic building on September 14, 2026 ([WJAR](https://turnto10.com/news/local/uri-cuts-ribbon-newly-renovated-fine-arts-center-university-of-rhode-island-september-14-2026)).

Family photo spot. Stand the family on the courtyard walks a few steps out from Brookside's west wall, turned partway toward the camera. The photographer stands west-southwest of them, with the sun low behind and to one side, which lights faces and the wall behind them in the same warm light. Go on Saturday at 5:25 PM, before the 8:00 PM show at the Ryan Center, or on Friday at 5:23 PM. Post it with #HengeDays. Computed from the building outline and the sun's position for a level horizon, and not checked on the ground. Trees west of the courtyard can take the sun before these times, so be there well ahead of them.

### Part 2: Kingston village and the shore

Kingston village is the historic district on Kingstown Road at the east edge of the campus, about 350 m south of the Higgins Welcome Center. The Kingston Free Library stands in the old courthouse of Kings County, later Washington County, finished in 1776. It was one of the five places the General Assembly met in turn from 1776 to 1791 ([The Independent](https://www.independentri.com/southcountylifemagazine/article_56329434-2143-4f6e-ad67-7e9d6fed9982.html)). The Kingston Congregational Church is across Kingstown Road, and Helme House, the gallery of the South County Art Association, is about 60 m south-east of the library. The Fayerweather House, about 400 m east on Mooresfield Road, was the home and shop of a family of Black and Narragansett blacksmiths, built in 1820 and kept by the Kingston Improvement Association ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Fayerweather_Blacksmith_Shop)). On Saturday, after the football viewing party in the Memorial Union, the village is about 600 m away on foot.

The village's buildings face within about 5 degrees of east and west, like the Quadrangle's halls, so none of their walls lines up with this weekend's low sun. The sunrise at the shore does. Narragansett Pier is about 13 km (8 miles) south-east by road, through Wakefield, whose Main Street of shops and restaurants is on the way. At Narragansett Town Beach the sun rises at 7:06 AM on Friday, 7:08 AM on Saturday and 7:09 AM on Sunday, at a bearing of 105 to 106 degrees, east-southeast. From the beach that bearing points out to sea, south of Beavertail Point on Jamestown, so the horizon is open water. Stand on the sand, or on the walk along the seawall on Ocean Road. The Towers, the granite arch over Ocean Road about 650 m south of the beach, is all that is left of the Narragansett Pier Casino of the 1880s, designed by McKim, Mead and White, which burned in 1900 ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Towers_(Narragansett,_Rhode_Island))). Sunrise times are from the Henge Days engine for a sea horizon.

### When the landmarks line up

The buildings a family asks about first do not face this weekend's low sun with a clear view. Their next days, from the same engine:

- [Kingston Free Library](https://hengedays.com/at/41.48065,-71.52522?q=Kingston+Free+Library%2C+2605+Kingstown+Road%2C+Kingston%2C+RI&b=osm%2Fway%2F404250387), 2605 Kingstown Road: the west wall, 20 m in sections facing 275 degrees, lines up with the sunset at the horizon from March 28 to 30, 2027.
- [Fayerweather House](https://hengedays.com/at/41.48038,-71.52023?q=Fayerweather+House%2C+1859+Mooresfield+Road%2C+Kingston%2C+RI&b=osm%2Fway%2F719059750), 1859 Mooresfield Road: the east-northeast wall, 9 m facing 78 degrees, lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from April 12 to 14, 2027.
- [The Towers](https://hengedays.com/at/41.43050,-71.45583?q=The+Towers%2C+35+Ocean+Road%2C+Narragansett%2C+RI&b=osm%2Fway%2F184348597), 35 Ocean Road, Narragansett: the east wall, 12 m facing 81 degrees toward the sea, lines up with the sunrise at the horizon from April 6 to 8, 2027.
- [Keaney Gymnasium](https://hengedays.com/at/41.48602,-71.53615?q=Keaney+Gymnasium%2C+85+Keaney+Road%2C+Kingston%2C+RI&b=osm%2Fway%2F151790771), 85 Keaney Road: the west wall, 67 m facing 273 degrees, lines up with the sunset at the horizon from March 24 to 26, 2027.
- The halls of the Quadrangle, Green Hall, Davis Hall, Lippitt Hall, Edwards Hall, Washburn Hall and Ranger Hall, face within 3 degrees of east and west. They line up with the sun in mid-March and mid-September, but their neighbors stand higher than the sun at those moments. So do the Carothers Library and the Memorial Union.

### How the list was made

Henge Days computed every named building within 300 to 400 meters of 14 points: the Quadrangle, the Carothers Library and Lippitt Road, the Memorial Union and Lower College Road, Butterfield and Hopkins halls, the Ryan Center and Keaney Gymnasium, the Fascitelli Center and the Fine Arts Center, the Flagg Road residence halls, Campus Avenue and the fraternity and sorority houses, two points in Kingston village, two on Main Street in Wakefield, Narragansett Pier and the Towers, and Narragansett Town Beach. It used OpenStreetMap outlines. It kept walls where the sun lines up with the wall within 6 degrees of the horizon on at least one day from Friday, October 23, to Sunday, October 25. It then traced the sun's path from each wall, against every outline it had fetched in all 14 areas, and dropped the walls where a neighboring building stands higher than the sun.

The check leaves four walls on three buildings, fewer than the other guides in this package. This weekend the sun rises at 105 to 106 degrees and sets at 254 to 255 degrees. Most of the campus and Kingston village are laid out square to the compass, with walls facing close to east and west, which line up near the equinoxes. Most of the walls that do face this weekend's sun are fraternity and sorority houses on the south-west side of the campus. Taller neighbors stand in front of nearly all of them at that moment: Zeta Tau Alpha, Theta Chi, Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Zeta Beta Tau and the Hillel Center, and the residence hall Hillside. The URI University Club and the Higgins Welcome Center line up with the sunrise behind other buildings, and so does Wiley Hall on Flagg Road, behind Brookside. Adams Hall has a wall with a clear view on Friday morning, 8 m long, and is left out as too short to photograph.

Wakefield's Main Street runs north-east to south-west, so its storefronts face south-east and north-west, away from this weekend's sunrise and sunset. The fetches there stopped at 200 outlines each, so some buildings in Wakefield were not checked. At Narragansett Pier the only wall that lines up is the Aqua Blue Hotel's east-southeast side, and the Narragansett Post Office stands in front of it at that moment. All four picks are golden days, with the sun 1.6 to 5.3 degrees up, and each entry says so.

Hills and trees are not part of that check, and the times assume a level horizon. Trees on the campus can take the light from a wall at these low angles. Most neighboring buildings carry no height in OpenStreetMap; the check assumed about three stories for them, and each entry says so. At Narragansett Town Beach the horizon is the sea, so the sunrise times hold there. Every date and time comes from the Henge Days engine for the wall's own bearing.

### How to read each entry

Each entry shows the building as Henge Days shows it. The map marks the building's outline from OpenStreetMap, gives every wall its compass bearing, and highlights the wall that lines up with the sun. Below it are the wall's row from the building's Henge days list, with a Save button that keeps the best day in your planner, and a year of head-on days for every wall. The Clear view line is the result of the check for other buildings on the best day.

Any building has a page like the ones above, your student's hall included. Whatever you shoot, post it with #HengeDays:
